A moment of softness between us, two not very outwardly soft people.

Wherever is Your Heart by Anita Kelly

February 20, 2022 by Emmalita Leave a Comment

Wherever is Your Heart starts after 5 years of pining. Mal is the bartender that the characters in Sing Anyway and Our Favorite Songs found scary/sexy/intimidating. Mal has steely eyes and keeps herself somewhat apart from the denizens of Moonies. June is a long-haul trucker who is based in Portland and has been stopping in to Moonies when she’s in town for 5 years. At the Pride festival the year before, something was almost said between them, but June got scared and left. June and Mal have […]

When something really fits, you suddenly realize how much energy you’ve been unconsciously devoting to not fitting.

Our Favorite Songs by Anita Kelly

February 17, 2022 by Emmalita Leave a Comment

After reading Love & Other Disasters, I knew I needed to read Anita Kelly’s Moonlighter’s novellas. Sing Anyway and Our Favorite Songs are so squishy and soft. They are like fresh homemade marshmallows, made with really good ingredients and not so sweet they rot your teeth. Instead of jet-puffed, they are hope-puffed. The Moonlight Café, known to it’s patrons as Moonies, is a slightly sketchy queer bar in a mostly industrial part of Portland, Oregon with regular karaoke nights. Sam Bell, Professor Sam Bell (they/them), has […]

Love and Other Disasters

Baking, love and LA traffic

Love & Other Disasters by Anita Kelly

That cover is incredibly gorgeous, and it actually accurately represents the main characters! Dahlia’s hair! London’s freckles! And like the cover, this book is just plain adorable. The authenticity of their feelings was such a breath of fresh air and I loved every bit. Dahlia is still reeling from her divorce, but cooking is the one thing that makes her feel in control of her life, the one thing she’s good at. She quit her job to go on Chef’s Special, an amateur cooking reality […]

A Stunning Queer Romance Debut

Love & Other Disasters by Anita Kelly

January 2, 2022 by faintingviolet 2 Comments

I received an ARC of Love & Other Disasters from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Love & Other Disasters publishes January 18th, 2022. I love when you can tell that a book was written from an authentic place, that the author is taking their own feelings, their own emotions, and building out from there to tell an honest story that they hope will resonate with readers. Anita Kelly (she/they) does just that in Love & Other Disasters and I’m so […]

The Sweetest Punch to the Face

Love and Other Disasters by Anita Kelly

September 28, 2021 by Emmalita 3 Comments

I loved this book so much. Between the cooking, the yearning, and the characters who have so much going on in their heads, Anita Kelly hit a lot of my happy buttons. Love and Other Disasters will probably be on a lot of best of lists and most anticipated lists next year. So, plan your pre-orders accordingly. London and Dahlia have been selected to be contestants on a tv cooking competition show for home cooks (not professionals). There is a substantial monetary prize, and for each […]
