To Infinity and Back – Sci Fi fantasy short story collection by the Earthsea lady. Some of it entertaining, some weird, all thought provoking.

September 3, 2014 by FyreHaar Leave a Comment

My husband picked this book up when he went out to get the Earthsea books (which he still has not read all the way through, I married a heathen). There are copious author’s notes that gave me an insight into LeGuin’s writing. She writes of the “psychomyth” as her main story type which greatly helped me in not trying to understand the stories in a rational sense but to let myself feel what the reading of them engendered. This book was engrossing and each piece […]

Doing the Monster Shamble…

September 3, 2014 by anevilweasel Leave a Comment

Shambling Towards Hiroshima – I had been wanting to read this for a very long time. The title, the cover…the premise.   It’s kind of hard to find in hardcopy, but I finally found it on Kindle ebook and I had a gift card so there you go. It’s a quick read:  our story starts out as our hero – Syms Thorley  – is writing his memoir in a Baltimore Hotel after winning  the “Raydo”  – a Lifetime Achievement award for Major Science Fiction/Fantasy […]

Claire and Jamie, Part Dhà

August 28, 2014 by Sophia 9 Comments

I couldn’t wait very long before my curiosity got the better of me and I went hunting for Dragonfly in Amber (1993) by Diana Gabaldon–the second in the Outlander series. This is the continuing story of Claire, the WWII nurse, dragged through time to the 1740’s and her adventures with Jamie Fraser, her sexy Highlander husband. This book follows the events leading up to the Jacobite rebellion in 1745, ending with the battle at Culloden. Jamie and Claire travel first to Paris before heading home […]

The First Rule of Vampires is …That They Don’t Exist….

August 27, 2014 by anevilweasel 1 Comment

Bob Howard and the Laundry do Vampires. The first rule of vampires is that they don’t exist.  But, if you find out that they do exist, then you are already dead or… part of the Laundry’s inner circle that knows these things. For those of you that haven’t read “The Laundry” series  by Charles Stross  – you might do  best to start with “The Atrocity Archives” – (I reviewed that last week).  Version 1.0 of the Laundry. This is kind of “version 5.0” and […]

If you lived 300 years…

August 27, 2014 by tillie 2 Comments

There are journeys that we never know where take us. I was not impressed. I was angry, and this anger stayed with me. I found it hard to forgive Anyanwu for loving Doro. When we first meet Anyanwu she has been living for 300 years in different villages, serving as their medicine woman. She is a healer and can change her body shape at will, changing from old to young, from human to animal, from woman to man. Doro can sense her and he diverts his […]

Finishing it up

August 27, 2014 by FyreHaar 1 Comment

After a hiatus I picked this book back up. (Mad spoilers for The Hunger Games and Catching Fire) The third book in the Hunger Games series, Mockingjay follows Katniss Everdeen through a rebellion led by District 13 against the Capital. Peeta Mellark, her maybe boyfriend and definite ally in the games is in the hands of the Capital. Katniss is herself in the hands of the authorities of District 13 which is not exactly freedom. She signs on to be the Mockingjay, the face of the […]

This sounds amazing. I saw some discussion today about contemporary monster romance being the descendant of fairy tales.
