Myth, magic and monsters — what can be bad?

September 10, 2014 by Valyruh 1 Comment

This was my first foray into Ilona Andrew’s popular “urban fantasy” series, and it was a fun ride—like Jim Butcher’s Dresden files with a little more sex and a lot more kapow, if possible! Gunmetal Magic is apparently a spin-off from the main series, and is centered on the story of Andrea Nash, best friend of the serie’s main character and all-around badass Kate Daniels. Andrea is definitely no slouch, and has an interesting backstory that calls to us from the very first pages. Andrea and […]

So endeth these Star Wars.

I apologize in advance for this review. Not only did I forget that I read this, and hence forget to rate it on Goodreads for almost two months, I read it so long ago I barely remember anything I wanted to say about it AND ALSO I didn’t take any notes. (Please refer to my reviews of the first and second books in the series for actual quality review material.) Here’s what I remember: This was my least favorite of the three adaptations. Of course, […]

When science fiction brilliantly captures humanity; THIS is why I started reading science fiction in the first place.

September 4, 2014 by tillie 1 Comment

I flipped back, at one point or another in my reading, to see when the book was written. Most science fiction ages quickly and when you live in a modern technological world some of the “novel” concepts conjured by writers of the past seem almost laughable. I was surprised to discover that “The Stars My Destination” was from 1956! The prose was clear and crisp and the dialogue seemed fresh with a twinge of slang that would be inevitable in the natural evolution of language. […]

Wibbly-Wobbly, Timey-Wimey…Stuff.

September 3, 2014 by ModernLove 2 Comments

Last March, I read ElCicco’s review of A Tale for the Time Being and thought to myself, that sounds interesting! A few weeks later I happened to be in my favorite local indie bookstore and saw it sitting on the shelf. It was spring break, I had some time off work and school, why not enjoy a good book? Well, the fact that I just finished it about two weeks ago probably tells you what I thought about the book. I wanted to like it. I […]

To Infinity and Back – Sci Fi fantasy short story collection by the Earthsea lady. Some of it entertaining, some weird, all thought provoking.

September 3, 2014 by FyreHaar Leave a Comment

My husband picked this book up when he went out to get the Earthsea books (which he still has not read all the way through, I married a heathen). There are copious author’s notes that gave me an insight into LeGuin’s writing. She writes of the “psychomyth” as her main story type which greatly helped me in not trying to understand the stories in a rational sense but to let myself feel what the reading of them engendered. This book was engrossing and each piece […]

Doing the Monster Shamble…

September 3, 2014 by anevilweasel Leave a Comment

Shambling Towards Hiroshima – I had been wanting to read this for a very long time. The title, the cover…the premise.   It’s kind of hard to find in hardcopy, but I finally found it on Kindle ebook and I had a gift card so there you go. It’s a quick read:  our story starts out as our hero – Syms Thorley  – is writing his memoir in a Baltimore Hotel after winning  the “Raydo”  – a Lifetime Achievement award for Major Science Fiction/Fantasy […]
