Still working our way through the Star Wars movie novelizations. The good news is that it’s all uphill from here. Watched the movie last night, too. What a stinkeroo, which clearly does not bode well for this book. The whole descent of Anakin Skywalker is just silly, his relationship with Padme is unrealistic and ridiculous, and poor Obi Wan Kenobi is stuck in the middle of this shit show with very little useful to do. So there’s not much to say about this book, since […]
Late to the Party; Still had…Fun?
“I tested the brackets by hitting them with rocks. This kind of sophistication is what we interplanetary scientists are known for.” So, here’s the thing. I know I’m late to the party (and I haven’t seen the movie yet, either), but sometimes I just get so damn stubborn about the things everybody wants me to check out I won’t try ’em even when I know I’ll like ’em.
I’m running out of ways to describe likable characters in an interesting sci-fi world.
This is the fifth book in the Old Man’s War series, which takes place in a Star Trek-like future where humans have colonized space, and are warring with other alien races for territory. It’s generally been a great read, and I highly recommend the series to any fan of science fiction. But…something happened on the way to book 4. Scalzi double dipped into the plot of book 3, and just retold the story from a different perspective. Maybe some don’t mind re-reading a story so […]
Ever Vigilant.
When I first read this book and put it down I wasn’t sure how I could ever review it. After 6 months I’m still struggling. As I read The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood it became the first book and the last book. All other books are doomed to be the mere shadow of a breath compared to the roaring gasp that is A Handmaid’s Tale. So this will not so much be a review as it will be a quick summary followed by an […]
Mars is Red, Earth is Blue/Boob jokes are funny, what else is new?
Meet Mark Watney. He is, in his own words, pretty much fucked. Mark is an astronaut on a mission to Mars. On the sixth day of the mission, a sand storm wreaks havoc and Mark is left for dead by the rest of his team, who escape back to earth. Mark, however, wakes up a little later, very hungover, very alive and very, very alone. It’s a nightmare scenario for a professional couch potato like me. There is a reason, however, that Mark is […]
Wherever Historians Go, Chaos is Sure to Follow
A few days ago, one of my far flung internet friends asked if I wanted to read something delightful. Natalie rarely recommends books, and each recommendation has ended up in my pantheon of favorites. I said yes, and here I am with a delightful book to recommend to you. One of Natalie’s previous recommendations was Connie Willis’ To Say Nothing of The Dog, which I also strongly recommend. A good chunk of the early part of Just One Damned Thing After Another reads like Jodi […]
