I loved this book enough that when I went to add it to my Goodreads list and saw it’s average rating of under 4.0, I was offended on its behalf. How dare other people not love this as much as me? But I get it. It’s a weird, wild read. The central plot is this: three girls live on an island where other teen girls keep mysteriously disappearing. Something sinister and otherworldly is behind this, and they must figure out how to work together to […]

I Made a Mistake Reading This Right Under the Cold Vent in my Room, I Tell You That
This is probably a story that most people are familiar with from some adaptation or another, but upon seeing the old copy of this book on my friend’s shelf recently, I realized that I have neither seen nor read a single one? Which on the one hand makes sense because I don’t ever really read horror, but at the same time my friend has gotten me into watching horror movies within the last few years so this almost seems like a bit of an oversight! […]
Still One of the Best Horror Books of All Time
I’m a huge horror fan, but am very picky about horror books. There are lots of great horror movies out there, but I always think there are far fewer great horror novels. Horror seems to work better as a short story or novella when written, for some reason, perhaps just because it’s hard to build and maintain tension for the entirety of a novel. But King? He tends to know what he’s doing when it comes to writing horror, even if he is often bad […]
I love cheesy 90s YA horror
First, this book was great, and I’m reminded of my oft-forgotten intention to find more Sleator. If you like Stine, but want a slightly older and more sci-fi bent, then you’ll love his books. I read Singularity years ago and kept an eye out for my own copy to buy ever since, which I picked up just recently. I found THE BOXES in a Shoprite used book sale-I think the money goes towards food kitchens-and immediately grabbed it. Second, I should mention that, for those […]
Childhood favorite
I’m not sure how old I was when I first read this book, but I do remember that it was a favorite. Some parts of this have stuck with me for over twenty years, influencing how I think ghost stories should work. Having been born in 1986, I still definitely feel like we 90s kids got the best ghost stories. We had a lot of authors that we still pass on to younger generations today. I’m honestly horrified when I meet a young reader-especially of […]
