Daredevil Season 3?

April 1, 2016 by Halbs 2 Comments

I have to preface this review by saying that Daredevil is on my Mount Rushmore of comic characters. He’s my guy. By day I’m an attorney and a person of faith, so I’m really into Matt Murdock’s worldview and how he wrestles with the balance of law, God, and justice. (If anyone cares, my other favorites are Moon Knight, Batman, and Booster Gold.) In a recent discussion of Netflix’ Daredevil series, someone online recently nudged me to Frank Miller’s Born Again, which collects  a story arc […]

Beautiful artwork, terrible storytelling

March 30, 2016 by yesknopemaybe Leave a Comment

I was so excited about the release of this installment in The Wicked + The Divine series. Volume 2 ended on such a great cliffhanger that I was sure Volume 3 would be amazing. Unfortunately I was very, very wrong. Gillen apparently decided that the best way to capitalize on the series’ momentum was treading water and not furthering the story at all. Commercial Suicide delves into the backstories of several of the gods in the pantheon. I’m not at all opposed to a good […]

At least politicians take credit for their insults these days. The founding fathers used pseudonyms to attack each other in print.

I’ve been listening to WNYC’s On the Media podcast religiously since 2007. News, especially political news, stresses me out, but something about OtM makes it bearable. They take an overhead view of issues and talk about the ways different types of media succeed or fail in a snarky, intellectual way. The hosts, Bob Garfield and Brooke Gladstone, are great. If I had to answer one of those questions about hosting dinner parties and inviting anyone dead or alive, Brooke would 100% be on my invite […]

Adulthood for beginners

March 8, 2016 by Caitlin_D 4 Comments

I haven’t read a true comic book since Calvin and Hobbes in grade school but I am in love with Sarah Andersen’s cartoons, which I discovered through Instagram, and impulsively bought her new book (out today!) with part of a birthday gift card. While it took all of fifteen minutes to read it was an enjoyable fifteen minutes- also, the cover page has felt letters so that’s a plus! I wished Andersen had taken a page out of Allie Brosh’s book and inserted some personal […]

Bad Feet

Dancer is a trade paperback collection of Nate Edmondson’s five part series of the same name. It was published by Image in 2012. In the first chapter, a grizzled old American and his Irish ballerina girlfriend are chased by police and an assassin. The assassin, it turns out, looks an awfully lot like the grizzled old American. On paper, Dancer sounds like a fantastic book. Image has been on fire, lately, Edmondson is working on major books like Punisher and Black Widow, and the premise is […]

Storycraft 101

February 24, 2016 by faintingviolet 2 Comments

Last year’s Book Riot Read Harder challenge has been the gift that keeps on giving for me. I’ve cruised through over a dozen audiobooks after having struggled to enjoy them in the past, and I’ve broken past my own weird hang-ups about graphic novels, narratives, and memoirs. It still isn’t a seamless process for me to read these works, which probably affects my rating of them, so do take my three-and-a-half-star rating with a grain of salt. Yesknopemaybe rated this book at five stars and […]
