Brigitte Meidell’s high ranking noble family all but banished her as a child, sending her to live in a cottage on her own, when she failed to make a contract with a high ranking spirit.  Prince Joseph took pity on her and became her only friend and fiancé.  At least until he broke off their engagement in front of the entire school.  Now adrift, Brigitte is charting her own path for the first time in years, returning to her childhood dreams of being a spiritologist, […]

“Vicar Roberts has become convinced there’s something unnatural in the neighborhood,” he said. “How strange. What might have led him to that belief?” “The bodies with no blood left in them, and the people with anemia, who all seem to have had vivid dreams involving bats. Things like that.”

A Night in the Lonesome October: a novel by Roger Zelazny, illustrated by Gahan Wilson

October 31, 2025 by bjornsnipe 1 Comment

Seeing as it’s October, I can’t let the month end without reading this book. I usually read it one chapter a night (there are 32 in total; one for each day of the month and a Prologue), but seeing as time got away from me this year, I wound up racing through it in one day. It may not be an overly long book, but it’s an enjoyable one. A Night in the Lonesome October tells the story of The Great Game, a sacred ritual […]

Skarsgård or Curry?

IT by Stephen King

Katabasis by R.F. Kuang

October 31, 2025 by Zirza Leave a Comment

Two Halloween-ish reads this month! I’ve been lagging behind a bit and that’s mostly to do with the fact that I ended up picking two hefty tomes that I didn’t enjoy all that much. First up: Stephen King’s IT.  We all know the story: mysterious killer clown kills children in `the small town of Derry, is chased by a group of people, first as children, then as adults. My dad made me watch the film when I was six. That’s all you need to know […]

Portions for Foxes

Nine Tailed by Jayci Lee

October 31, 2025 by Jen K Leave a Comment

Bingo Square – N – and 3 bingos, making for 5 total (1. middle row – BINGO, 2. middle column, and 3. diagonal bottom left to top right) I got this one sometime last year as a Prime First choice (I usually don’t bother because I have enough books I want to read that I haven’t gotten to without adding random free stuff but every once in a while they’ll have an option that sounds like something I would have picked up on my own), […]

The First Was Good, the Second a Letdown

The Sunbearer Trials by Aiden Thomas

Celestial Monsters by Aiden Thomas

October 31, 2025 by Tracy 2 Comments

The Sunbearer Trials I really liked this. While it didn’t measure up to the joy that Cemetery Boys brought me, it was a strong showing from Aiden Thomas. It’s set in a Mexican-inspired fantasy world, although it is very similar to our own world in terms of technology and even cultural references (e.g., it has Chupa Chups). Main character Teo is surprised to be selected to compete in the Sunbearer Trials. The loser of this trial becomes a sacrifice to protect the world, and the winner […]

So I Probably Should Have Googled the Author first

The Binding by Bridget Collins

October 31, 2025 by Jen K Leave a Comment

Bingo Square: TBR (bought it as a daily deal over 2 years ago) – this is also the last square I can mark without also getting another Bingo To start, this was a book I randomly had in my kindle account because it was a fantasy novel with an interesting concept and a gorgeous cover that was cheap/on sale one day (I think it had an olderc prettier version of the cover still when I bought it). I haven’t seen much (or anything) about this […]
