“In conclusion, women are just awful, and periods prove it.”

March 18, 2017 by TheShitWizard 2 Comments

I wouldn’t have known about Unmentionable: The Victorian Lady’s Guide to Sex, Marriage and Manners if it hadn’t been for the reviews on this site, so a BIG thank you to all of the Cannonballers whose reviews placed it firmly on my radar, leading to much cackling and interruptions of my footie-watching boyfriend with a ‘Listen to this…’. Tackling all of the daily realities of Victorian ladies – an era that we’re visiting as relatively wealthy, European women so as to ensure things stay on […]

Your Moment of Zen

March 17, 2017 by Lane Leave a Comment

I have watched The Daily Show from the beginning and only recently gave up on it. I loved it more some years than others and then gradually lost interest and stopped. That is also how my reading of this book went. I gave up with a few dozen pages left because the drain Jon Stewart was feeling really drains the fun from the last part of this book. But if you love the show and all the contributors than this is an interesting retelling of […]

I Stand Alone on this Hill

March 17, 2017 by melanir 6 Comments

I’m going to be the cheese that stands alone on this one, and I’m ok with that but I thought I should warn you. I know this is a much beloved book by many Cannonballers however, I find myself extremely underwhelmed by it. A large resounding meh is about all I can work up for it, and if I’m honest for The Bloggess and her blog. Which is probably an indication that this book really wasn’t for me in the first place. So yes, this […]

Really…is is just what it sounds like

March 16, 2017 by badkittyuno Leave a Comment

I stumbled across Justin Valmassoi’s slightly emo tumblr a few years ago (if I remember correctly, the whole point of it initially was to get a girl, and maybe he did get the girl? I can’t remember). I read the whole thing in an afternoon, and promptly forgot about its existence until the book version popped up on my Overdrive. Reading the book version was basically the same experience: some of the caption/picture combinations made me laugh, some were kind of dumb, all of it will have evaporated […]

Read it for the puns, not the recipes

March 16, 2017 by badkittyuno 3 Comments

I have never watched Hannah Hart’s YouTube channel, in which she gets drunk and cooks things — although that does sound like fun. This book is not a cookbook, but rather a sort of rambling version of those videos (which presumably also ramble). She does include some recipes, but you’re not going to want to cook them, I promise. The puns are a lot of fun though, if you like your puns terrible and groan-worthy (as I do). “What do you call it when you drink […]

Now I just miss Pamie.com

March 16, 2017 by badkittyuno Leave a Comment

My first exposure to Laurie Notaro was The Idiot Girls’ Action-Adventure Club: True Tales from a Magnificent and Clumsy Life — which I read on Pamie.com’s recommendation when I was a teenager. At the time, Notaro would have been in her 30s, and that book was full of silly stories about single girls in their 20s, battling hangovers at their minimum wage jobs. I loved it. Now, I’m 31, Notaro’s in her 50s, and her stories mostly revolve around making her husband crazy, and getting old and […]
