I got this book as part of my free trial with Audible….it’s 34 hours long….it’s 13 novellas. Deals! Novella 1: Vaster than Empires and More Slow 1975 – 4/5 stars I haven’t read any of the Hainish novels. And in fact, I haven’t read much of Ursula K Le Guin at all. So I will have to reverse engineer any of the novels that come across in this collection that refer back to any series or worldview. I THINK it will be ok, because […]
‘Tis sweet and commendable in your nature, Hamlet
It feels weird to be here again, thinking through how I feel about a book regarding someone’s loss. I quote Hamlet above not because I agree with Claudius’s desire to stop Hamlet’s feelings; and certainly not because I trying to say the same for Joan Didion. Joan Didion’s pain and thoughtfulness and her research into the nature of grief and the very real sense of her own grief are all sympathetic and good and fine. But man Joan Didion’s whole worldview irks the shit out […]
Sad People are Merciless
I almost didn’t read this because of the gross, manipulative movie by the same name. The reason I DID watch that movie is that that album by Low is one of my favorites. So this was a chance to reclaim that title back from that terrible movie. This is a good collection of stories. I think the review that says this is like Julio Cortazar meets Shirley Jackson is definitely wrong. This is Shirley Jackson meets Argentina. These stories are weird and dark and sometimes, […]
Book-culiarities: The book is fine, but I turned this review into a survey on bookly habits.
This book is fine. It’s a fine book. It’s a book about books, and this is a website about books, but it’s not profound, but it is charming. It was short, and it did not take much time to read and it made me feel nice about my books and my reading. But I thought it would be more interesting to think on some of the topics in the the book and create a questionnaire for readers here to think over and answer as you […]
Normally I don’t like short experimental fiction….
This story collection is already part of a story. Kathleen Collins died almost 30 years ago and this collection was published last month. Like other posthumous books, the very book has a story to it. Apparently her work was found by her daughter and it goes from there. Something about a book written not necessarily for publication and not in a weird kind of gravedigging way has an appeal to me. Obviously some books that fall into this category are just bad, where the death […]
Finding arguments of no avail
I am not sure how funny this book was supposed to be, but I thought it was pretty funny. It’s kind of standard fare: she’s young and she INSISTS on leaving home to become a governess. Turns out kids are hard to deal with and she’s not very good at it. That’s ok because there’s a handsome young minister she has met literally one time who will come over and charm her and alls will be well. It’s a really short book, but it felt […]
