No half-werewolf nerd is illegal

Lobizona by Romina Garber

February 24, 2026 by vega-table Leave a Comment

In Argentina there is a law that the president has to be the godfather of the 7th child, otherwise that child will turn into a werewolf (lobizon). I thought Lobizona by Romina Garber was about a girl who comes into her werewolf powers amidst ICE turmoil. That isn’t not what the book is about; but it’s nicer and less angry than the low fantasy action I imagined. Manu has spent her life in hiding since she’s undocumented AND has yellow eyes with star shaped pupils. […]

Kingdom vol 1

Refreshingly good

Kingdom, vol. 1-2 by Yasuhisa Hara

February 20, 2026 by vega-table 2 Comments

It felt good to read the first 2 volumes of Kingdom by Yasuhisa Hara after a lot of junk food books. It reminded me a lot of Vagabond by Takehiko Inoue, so I was not surprised to see Hara worked as Inoue’s assistant in the past. In ancient China, two boys named Xin and Piao are best friends and slaves with ambitious goals to be great generals – the only path out of slavery* for them and their wives and children. Not that they have […]

I could keep talking about Doritos

Red River, vols. 1-24 by Chie Shinohara

February 19, 2026 by vega-table Leave a Comment

Red River by Chie Shinohara is so indulgent and melodramatic that if I was 12, I’d have strong opinions about it. As an adult, it’s like feeding my brain Doritos. Evil Queen Nakia wants her son to be king in the ancient Hittite empire. But as the youngest of the current king’s sons, the little princelet has a few people in front of him. So Nakia plans to kill her son’s half-brothers. This is all straightforward, but it gets ridiculous and convoluted because she’s an […]

Cover of womb City by Tlotlo Tsamaase

So close

Womb City by Tlotlo Tsamaase

February 7, 2026 by vega-table 4 Comments

Womb City by Tlotlo Tsamaase takes place in some far future Botswana. The world is practically a crime free utopia for men – thanks to a lack of privacy and misogyny. And with body hopping technology, people can practically live forever. The setup is like Minority Report meets Altered Carbon. I think. I’ve only seen part of one of those. Nelah is a successful and kinda famous architect with a seemingly supportive husband, a seemingly supportive secret lover, and a criminally prone body. (I appreciated the […]

Cover of Otherworld Barbara by Hagio Moto

Or, why I don’t have children

Otherworld Barbara by Hagio Moto

January 20, 2026 by vega-table 3 Comments

First, I have a bias towards Fantagraphics books. Their publications feel good in the hand and I sometimes pause my reading to inspect the binding and imagine the books I’d want them to do. The volumes of Otherworld Barbara by Hagio Moto that I read were from them, so I may have enjoyed them more than I would if they were published by someone else. There’s a lot going on in this story. There’s time travel and doppelgangers and identity switching, and it’s all dreamy. […]

Cover of Wormwood by Layla Martinez

Hateful child snatching witches just misunderstood victims of society

Wormwood by Layla Martinez

January 7, 2026 by vega-table Leave a Comment

Wormwood (or Caroma) by Layla Martinez, and translated from Spanish by Sophie Hughes and Annie McDermott, is the story of a bitter grandmother and her bitter granddaughter living together in a haunted house. I’m just now realizing they are nameless. It’s been a long time since I’ve read any Shirley Jackson, but this felt similar to her work. Because of this Jackson feeling, I assumed the house would be big. It’s not. Living in a small haunted house sucks. It was built to be haunted […]
