Starting off on the Wrong Spring Heeled Foot

January 28, 2018 by Quorren 2 Comments

In theory, this book had all the elements that are right up my alley. There’s speculative fiction/alternative history, there’s steam punk aesthetics, there’s camp! In spite of all of the things it had going for it, it was an uninspired mess. It read more as some weird fan fiction of the Victorian era found in some dark corner of the internet than a book that people were expected to pay money for. (Sadly, I did pay money for this disappointment.) Sir Richard Francis Burton (of […]

badkittyuno is a book sommelier!

December 8, 2016 by Quorren 1 Comment

A big thanks to badkittyuno, whose super power must be picking out the perfect book for someone! I am super excited with my gifts – Little Face by Sophie Hannah and A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness – I can’t even decide which one to read first!

Xena’s Got Nothing on Her

January 18, 2016 by Quorren 2 Comments

I was not expecting to enjoy this as much as I did.  I mainly picked it up out of loyalty to Gail Simone.  Gail Simone has also been synonymous with Batgirl, but after the New 52, the rumor is that she butted heads with DC, not enjoying the changes they were forcing onto Batgirl, so she quit.  Dynamite grabbed her up immediately because the only comic book company out there that still doesn’t get it about women being another demographic that buys comic books is […]

Kushiel’s Dart May Strike True, But It Takes a Damn Long Time to Get There

January 18, 2016 by Quorren 1 Comment

I had some weird, odd deja vu  going on reading this one.  It tripped a bunch of nostalgia centers in my brain, but since I’m positive I’ve never read it before, I’m going to chalk it up to this being a book I would have LOVED in high school.  (Not that that’s a slight on the book or anything, but it totally would have fit right into my geometry book once I finished reading about the vampire Lestat during class instead of memorizing the Pythagorean […]

We All Need Gale Force Reading Glasses

January 11, 2016 by Quorren Leave a Comment

Gale Force Reading Glasses, in the world of Fairy Tail, allow the reader to read two to thirty-two times faster, depending the on the quality of the book.  Which, I think we can all agree, would be a godsend to all the cannonballers out there. This issue picks up in the middle of Natsu and Lucy’s first real guild mission.  They’ve been sent in to infiltrate an arrogant millionaire’s household and steal back a book.  Only Lucy doesn’t appear to be his type.  So they […]

Just A Simple Story about a Boy and His Friendship with His Cat

January 5, 2016 by Quorren Leave a Comment

A few years ago, I wondered why I hadn’t gotten into manga the same way I had graphic novels, so I decided to give it a go.  I went with Fairy Tail after binging the first few seasons of the anime already on Netflix.  In retrospect I probably should have started with a series that has already ended, so I have some sort of goal line on the horizon, but, you know, hindsight and all.  So I yoked myself to a current series and the burden […]

I really enjoyed this one. I was particularly amused at Lady Catherine deBoutgh’s disgust at her assassin’s incompetence.
