Good evening, everyone. I'm Leslie Monster, and this is Nightline. (Learn more about this Cannonballer: narfna's Quick Questions interview.)

narfna's Reviews:

I’ll save you having to read this review: Just go watch The Lizzie Bennet Diaries on YouTube. I mean it. GO!

August 20, 2014 by narfna 4 Comments

Okay, now when you’re done with that, come back and read this review. And then maybe get yourself a copy of The Secret Diary of Lizzie Bennet and snuggle up in your reading chair for a couple of hours. What this book is, basically, is an adaptation of a YouTube series, which is itself a modern day adaptation of Jane Austen’s Pride & Prejudice, told in interactive vlog-form (there are additional in-world videos, Tumblrs, and Twitter accounts, and if you watched live, you could interact with […]

Not as bad as I thought it was going to be.

ETA: My initial review stated one thing wrong: this is not the final book. THERE IS A FOURTH BOOK COMING NEXT YEAR OH MY GOD WHY ISN’T THIS SERIES OVER YET. I gotta be honest here. I went into this book fully expecting it to be awful. The cover appeals to me on a very basic level (the level that likes shiny and poofy things), but my experience with the last book left me convinced there was no way Cass could possibly write a third […]

I’m a nice man.

Rogues was my second George R.R. Martin/Gardner Dozois themed anthology in less than six months, and I’m happy to say I enjoyed it more overall than their previous effort, Dangerous Women. (I will pick up Warriors eventually. Maybe next year. I’m soooo done with anthologies for now.) And I’m sad to say, especially for how good Martin is at writing lady characters, I really think the main difference is that a lot of genre writers (including women!) just could not fathom how to write a […]

The Adventures of Strike and Robin, Vol. II: The Publishing Industry

July 29, 2014 by narfna Leave a Comment

Ugh, this is going to be one of those reviews where I just flounder for things to say because a) I waited too long to write it, and b) I can’t really sum up my feelings into precise words. The short of it: I really, really, really liked this book. I still don’t quite LOVE it, but I’m allllmost there. A couple more books should do the trick. (In fact, I did like it better than The Cuckoo’s Calling, although at certain points it was much […]

The melting snowball effect.

July 25, 2014 by narfna Leave a Comment

After reading the prologue of this book, I was 100% sure I was going to love it. That is not exactly what ended up happening. Let me tell you what happens in the prologue, as a sort of illustration: The book opens with this kid on the roof. He’s pretty much an outcast, and he’s been chased up there by his schoolmates. He’s wearing a uniform, so this is a private school, and there are statues of Saints decorating the roof, so it’s Catholic. This kid […]

I’m not going to lie to you. I mostly only read this because Eggs Benedict Cucumberbatch is in the movie.

July 23, 2014 by narfna 7 Comments

Okay, so, previous statement about not lying may be slightly a lie. I originally bought this book in 2011 right before the movie came out. I don’t think Eggs Benedict was even on the menu at that point in my life. (I think I watched Sherlock for the first time later that year when it ran on PBS?) Anyway, I mostly bought it because I’d really enjoyed The Constant Gardener (and by really enjoyed I mean I FUCKING LOVED IT–that book slays me), and had also […]

I think there is more visibility for stories with older and middle aged women. I’m here for it.
