I think it’s been twenty years or more since I last read this book. I remember this book being an absolutely pivotal one in my childhood, opening wide the doors of fantasy to a little girl who had never seen herself in the hero’s role before. This was still a few years before Hermione Granger would forever change my world, but Meg Murray, Mrs Which, Mrs Who, and Mrs Whatsit (and even Aunt Beast!) were pivotal in my development as a reader. It was also […]
George R. R. Martin in space, book 5
I love science fiction. I love genre fiction. It is my happy place. This is my ball of wax, my kettle of fish, this is what lights my Bunsen burner. As a series, The Expanse has rapidly become one of my absolutely of all times favorites and, damn, if this wasn’t the best so far. Set hundreds of years in the future, when humanity has colonized Mars, moons, and space stations and when entire generations have been born, lived, and died in space and evolved […]
My first LOVE of the year
Y’all, I don’t really know where to start with this book. I loved it. And I don’t fully understand what I read? I devoured every word but also had a tough time picking it back up after I’d put it down. It was amazing and I am going to have a very hard time telling you why. I did not know the backstory on this one until I was almost through, but twenty years ago, the author Arundhati Roy broke onto the scene with her […]
A popular thriller worth your time
I couldn’t remember where I’d seen this book recommended and that made me I think understandably cautious. The general summary—it’s about the daughter of a female serial killer and her life after turning in her own mother—made me more cautious. But I gave it a go because ebooks from the library have made me much more freewheeling in my reading choices. And you know what, I’m glad I did. I think I was still reeling from My Absolute Darling (dear christ do not read that book). […]
One for the times
Well, this one was certainly timely. Startup is a tech story set in New York, not Silicon Valley. All the main characters work for two companies in the same building–one, the titular startup and the other a TechCrunch-style news source. The characters feel a little stock, frankly. There’s the tech bro, the jaded reporter, the dogged reporter, the put-upon wife, the pretty girl. As tech bro starts to secure another round of fund for his (honestly, useless) app, a story starts to break that he […]
I didn’t care for it, but I couldn’t put it down
I’m going to preface my CBR by saying that I am a book snob. I have referred to Dan Brown books as “entry level”. When it comes to books, my boyfriend says I am everyone he hates on the internet (I think he means it fondly?). So. Yeah. And I read Big Little Lies and holy smokes did I love that book. My whole book club loved that book, we talked about literally nothing else the whole night we met and how often does that […]
