Less the colour of magic, more the shades

Until We Shatter by Kate Dylan

March 7, 2025 by kittenkong42 1 Comment

Over a year ago now I signed up for a subscription to Illumicrate. Each month I get sent a box filled with beautiful hardback book in the fantasy / science fiction category normally with edge printing and specially done covers and end-pieces, often signed. In addition you get 4 or 5 ‘goodies’ that can be anything from a bookmark to a large fleece throw. Basically it’s a great deal and the only problem was my failure to get my act together and read the damn […]

Cover of graphic novel Wayne Family Adventures Volume 2

Wayne Family Adventures Volume 2 by CRC Payne & Starbite

October 31, 2024 by kittenkong42 Leave a Comment

Introduction I have been a fan of Batman as a character since I was a teenager. Whilst I never bought comics every week, I did have graphic novels and some collections. I now want to apologise for it but I did vote in favour of Jason Todd being killed in Death in the Family (I am so sorry Jason, you deserved better!). I’d drifted away a bit but I started seeing a lot of cute Bat Family posts on Tumblr from this webtoon called Wayne […]

A Winter’s Tale from the Rivers of London

Winter's Gift by Ben Aaronovitch

August 4, 2024 by kittenkong42 Leave a Comment

Winter’s Gift is the most recent novella in the ongoing River’s of London series by Ben Aaronovitch and the subject actually came as a surprise to me when I got the book. When you have a character in the series called Tobias Winter (a German police officer) then an assumption that this is one of his books seemed logical, instead this is set in the US and features FBI agent Kimberley Reynolds. Rewinding for a Rivers of London recap: magic is real, gods exist and […]

Godzilla movie adaptation book cover

Go, Go, Godzilla

Godzilla: The Official Movie adaptation by Greg Cox

May 16, 2023 by kittenkong42 Leave a Comment

I’m a fan of Kaiju in general, I absolutely love Pacific Rim and hated the western world’s first attempts at Godzilla movies (they were not good). But they tried again back in 2014 and I gave it a shot at the cinema because Ken Watanabe and it seemed a bit more ‘accurate’ to my image of the Big Guy. As a movie it wasn’t perfect and characterisation felt a bit flat so when I did a rewatch over New Year I was steered in the […]

When Fairy Tales go bad

Deadly Ever After by Ben Aaronovitch

December 28, 2022 by kittenkong42 Leave a Comment

Deadly Ever After is the latest graphic novel from the increasingly extensive Rivers of London series. I read it as the 4 comics but it will also be available in graphic novel form (which is what I’ll buy my mum for her to read). Sequence wise this is the latest chronological story in canon so may not work for a new reader but as it mostly focuses on 2 side characters it could actually work ok as an introduction to a London in which magic […]

The Elenium & Tamuli: More fantasy tropes than you can imagine

The Diamond Throne by David Eddings

The Ruby Knight by David Eddings

The Sapphire Rose by David Eddings

Domes of Fire by David Eddings

The Shining Ones by David Eddings

The Hidden City by David Eddings

December 23, 2022 by kittenkong42 2 Comments

After the success of the Belgariad and Malloreon the author David Eddings followed it up with another twin series – this time the trilogies known as the Elenium and the Tamuli. These series focused initially on a quasi-medieval European society complete with monarchies, internal squabbles between nobility, knights in armour, and a dominant Catholic style church. Later, we travel further afield into an East Asian analogue as well. Layered over this is the concept of gods being very real and capable of giving the gift […]
