kella's Reviews:

In which I try to start getting caught up on all my long overdue reviews… yikes…

July 10, 2017 by kella 1 Comment

Soooo yeah.  It happened.  I started this CBR knowing that I NEEDED to stay on top of the reviews.  That lasted until April.  <sigh> #thestruggleisreal I really HAVE read many books since then, but the problem was reading on vacation where there was limited internet access and the inability to post anything.  Things have derailed since that point. So today, I am attempting to get back on track a bit.  Hopefully. SO! My last review was for A Darker Shade of Magic, the first book […]

Magical deliciousness

April 6, 2017 by kella Leave a Comment

I received this book for Christmas from my mom; she went to the local bookstore and just happened to pick something that I would love without me providing a detailed list of titles and authors.  A Christmas miracle! 🙂 In this book, our magical hero Kell lives in London at a time where different worlds are layered on top of each other. The geography of each London is the same, but everything else is drastically different (including the magical abilities of the residents).  He is only […]

Read all four, you’ll be glad you did.

The Giver was a recent selection for a book club I’m in, and so when I picked up my copy I figured I might as well get the ‘quartet’ edition that also has the other three books that follow: Gathering Blue, Messenger, and Son. I don’t read a ton of YA fiction, so these were nice quick palate cleansers after The Devourers. 😉 THE GIVER (Book #1) The world that Jonas lives in is a carefully orchestrated and controlled society. Families are created in labs, […]

Well that was….. different….

March 7, 2017 by kella 2 Comments

Because of work craziness, March has been a gongshow month for me in terms of reading, but I was determined to get this one done before the 8th.  I’m in the group of those who voted for this selection, and I’m not 100% sure if I stand by it, or if I want to apologize to you all. I’ll go light on plot synopsis here, because this has already been reviewed and discussed lots here recently. Alok is approached one evening by a mysterious stranger who […]

I’ll maybe think of a witty title when I stop crying….

First piece of advice: if you hypothetically happen to already be a crazy ball of PMS-ing emotions, maybe give this one a pass until next week.  Unless you’re a fan of messy, snotty, tears.  Hypothetically. This book centres on Tom and his wife Isabel,  just after WWI.  Tom is a lighthouse keeper on a remote island off the coast of Australia- isolated from anyone except his wife; a supply boat comes every three months, and they get to visit the mainland once every three years. […]

But mostly I hate the way I don’t hate you, not even close, Not even a little bit, not even at all.

This was book #2 of yesterday’s “needing some light reading while sick” double header.  I picked this up based on CBR reviews because so many of you loved it. Lesson learned: y’all know what you’re talking about.  This was a perfect sickday book (except for how late I stayed up to finish it). Lucy and Josh are workplace rivals, both administrative assistants to publishing house CEOs, thrown into the same office after a company merger.  The loathe each other, but of course all is not […]
