A pop culture junkie, Katie has an addiction to tragically bad romance novels. In addition, Katie is resolute in her belief that Evans is #BestChris and has moved to the PNW from the Bayou. Can anyone say culture shock?

Growing up sometimes sucks, or why you shouldn’t revisit past favourites

When I was a kid, we’d spend a week with each set of grandparents every summer. I’ve always been a voracious reader, but then I was ridiculous. I couldn’t possibly bring enough books with me for a one week stay, so I’d read whatever the grandparents had lying around. Fortunately for me, my mom’s parents were also readers and always had new books available. My grandfather had a penchant for Robert Ludlum and Larry McMurtry; my grandmother for books that are too “important” to go […]

Wash. Rinse. Repeat.

For me, it all started with a Facebook message from a dear friend whom I’ve never actually met. “A friend of mine bought me some books – said I HAD to read them. I’m trying. I think my friend has problems.” Needless to say, this completely piqued my curiosity. Upon further inquiry on my part, it turned out to be Kristen Ashley’s Colorado Mountain series. I’d never heard of it, but evidently they are bestsellers. I have now read the first two, The Gamble and […]

Put the book down and back away. Back far, far away.

If you are new to Laurell K. Hamilton’s Anita Blake series, this is not the place to start. Jason is a novella ostensibly concerning one of Anita’s closest friends and his girlfriend. Really it’s just an excuse for a chapters-long orgy scene. If you are a veteran reader of the series, do yourself a favor and leave it be unless you enjoy reading gratuitous, not particularly sexy, sex scenes. The best thing that can be said about Jason is that it was less than $5. It’s a […]

I would do anything for you, but I won’t do that

Actually, the title of this review is a complete misnomer. The Song of the Lioness Quartet is a series of four books about a girl named Alanna and her friends and family who work towards helping her become the first lady knight in the Kingdom of Tortall. A few of them know she’s a girl, most just believe her to be a really small boy. No one cuts her any slack. The first of the books is (quite originally!) Alanna: The First Adventure. It’s about the time Alanna spends […]

It’s true. I’m not going to lie – I’ve read Robin McKinley’s The Hero & the Crown many, many times. I felt like I wanted (maybe needed is a better term?) to review a book I’m very familiar with for my inaugural Cannonball Read post. (If it helps, I just paid to have it added to my Kindle collection.) Aerin is the only child of Arlbeth, King of Damar. She is also the only child of that Witchwoman from the North, and as such is regarded […]
