I’ve been around off and on since the first year of CBR, and it and books have been a constant in my life through multiple moves and a major career change. I live with 3 cats, Dany, Jace and Jorah. Fantasy, specific types of sci-fi, historical fiction (especially mysteries) and romance tend to be my go to genres now a days. The power of three will set us free

The Women of Wild Hill by Kirsten Miller

October 8, 2025 by Jen K Leave a Comment

While I didn’t rate The Change as 5 stars (there were some pacing issues in the middle), I quite enjoyed it and have been thinking back to it quite a bit since reading it last December (even more so in the last few months given certain political topics). As a result, I was looking forward to Kirsten Miller’s new release, The Women of Wild Hill. As a general reaction, there were quite a few things I liked better about this novel and that I think […]

Would have been better without the forced thriller/mystery angle

Wild Dark Shore by Charlotte McConaghy

October 6, 2025 by Jen K Leave a Comment

Bingo Square: Family (four of the five characters are from the same family) The setting of this novel is the best part – set on a fictional island, Shearwater, near Antarctica, it follows a family of four (father, Dominic, and three children) as they prepare to leave Shearwater forever after eight years as caretakers. Shearwater is home to one of the largest seed banks in the world, a large seal population, and once housed a thriving science community. But climate change is coming for even […]

Takes a “Characters Welcome” first approach

The Impossible Fortune by Richard Osman

October 5, 2025 by Jen K Leave a Comment

Bingo Square: White It’s been about a year since the events of the last Thursday Murder Club novel, and it has been quiet as characters are dealing with grief and changing circumstances. But when the best man at Joyce’s daughter’s wedding approaches Elizabeth during the reception to ask for help, it is enough to kick-start the events of the novel and get the gang back together to investigate a potential murder or kidnapping. There are also a few other loose threads from previous books that […]

Back when there were still witches

The Bewitching by Silvia Moreno-Garcia

October 5, 2025 by Jen K Leave a Comment

While I really enjoyed a few of Silvia Moreno-Garcia’s novels, I was hesitant about this one. While her release before this one, The Seventh Veil of Salome, should have been right up my alley, I ended up giving up on it fairly early. It also had a bit of a dual/multi timeline and narrator thing going on and I just ended up not quite being as interested in some of them to keep reading. When I saw this one also involved multiple time lines, I […]

Asian inspired urban fantasy series? Yes, please

Ebony Gate by Julia Vee

October 5, 2025 by Jen K 3 Comments

Emiko left her place at home and in her family two years ago, leaving Tokyo and all the politics behind for San Francisco. However, when a death god calls in on a blood talon (a commitment for a future favor in exchange for services rendered) given by Emiko’s mother, Emiko finds herself answering the call to protect her younger brother. Someone has stolen the gate between the realm of the dead and our world, and Emiko has less than 2 days to get the gate […]

Dragons, Art and Noodles

A Forgery of Fate by Elizabeth Lim

October 5, 2025 by Jen K Leave a Comment

First off, yes, this does share the same universe as the Six Crimson Cranes duology but you don’t need to have read that to follow this one. In fact you might be better off because you won’t be trying to remember if you have briefly met a character before. Tru’s father was lost at sea five years ago, and her father’s absence combined with her mother’s gambling habit quickly thrust the family into poverty. Tru and her two sisters do what they can to help […]
