Tall person, avid reader and avid, but less successful, gardener. I read a lot of sci fi, fantasy and literary fiction with the occasional smattering of mysteries.

Come and Get It by Kiley Reid

February 20, 2026 by G.D. Giant Leave a Comment

Come and Get It, by Kiley Reid takes place over one semester at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville. Most of the book takes place in the scholarship/transfer student dorm there. And the main cast of characters includes a few RAs and residents of the dorm, as well as a visiting professor/writer from the north. I know this book won’t be for everyone, but aside from a couple of issues, it was very much for me. One, I found much of the book to be […]

The Siren

Ignore This Siren’s Song

The Siren by Katherine St. John

February 5, 2026 by G.D. Giant Leave a Comment

In “The Siren,” the handsome, famous, wealthy, charismatic, sexy Cole Powers is shooting a film on a small Caribbean island. The writer-director is Cole’s estranged son, Jackson. And the movie also stars Cole’s ex-wife, the actress Stella Rivers. Along for the ride is producer Taylor Wasserman (also estranged from her father), influencer Madison Kasabian, and Stella’s assistant, the very realistically named Felicity Fox. And half of them want to kill one of the others. I chose this book because although I usually prefer sci-fi and […]

Mean Sabine

Bury Our Bones in the Midnight Soil by V.E. Schwab

January 13, 2026 by G.D. Giant Leave a Comment

This book is about three lesbian vampires. One is Scottish, one is English, and the other one is mean as hell. The Scottish vampire, Alice, is the newest vampire, and for me, the least interesting. I think that’s why her character arc surprised me the most. Sis went from high anxiety to a high body count (in the murder-y way) real fast. The English vampire is Charlotte. She is the second oldest and the most sympathetic, in my opinion. Girlie just wanted to be with […]

Shades of Magic

November 29, 2017 by G.D. Giant Leave a Comment

As with my last review, this was a re-read for me as well. Well, most of it was a re-read. I had actually read the first two books of this series, A Darker Shade of Magic and A Gathering of Shadows, previously and decided to re-read them before reading the final book, A Conjuring of Light. I really enjoyed these books and what I enjoyed most are the two main characters. The first character we meet is Kell. An Antari (blood magician), Kell is from […]

More Pink, Please

November 27, 2017 by G.D. Giant Leave a Comment

So, this was a re-read of this series for me and I have to say that I loved it as much this time as I did the first time around. Pierce Brown created an absolutely fascinating world for this series, and he did so beautifully. The books center on Darrow, a “Red” who works in the mines below the surface of Mars. The Reds are mining a material that will allow Mars to be terraformed so that humans can successfully colonize it. It is important work […]

Ready Player One by Ernest Cline

Into the OASIS

September 25, 2017 by G.D. Giant 1 Comment

I actually first read this book, Ready Player One, by Ernest Cline, a couple of years ago. And, at that time, I only gave it four stars.  I thought it was good, and sometimes even great, but uneven. Although I was familiar with a lot of the RPG gaming references and 80s movie references, the arcade and video game references were, for the most part, completely over my head. And the references to Japanese cartoon and robots were on a different planet. So, I didn’t […]
