Change is What You Make of It.

I adore Kamala Khan, Ms. Marvel. I am so glad that G. Willow Wilson is writing her. I’m so happy this all exists. Kamala has come a long way from her exposure to the Terrigen mist and that first fan girly team up with Wolverine. Some members of her family know, she’s a member of the Avengers, and Jersey City has come to view her as their own superhero. But success and notoriety come with a price. Reputations can be changed with just a whisper, […]

Meta Midsomer Murders

December 15, 2017 by Emmalita 4 Comments

First of all, I’ve got to give credit to my dearest Angry Dimples. We live on opposite sides of the planet and she has been the most constant human presence in my life these past 5 or 6 years. When she asked if I would be interested in reading Anthony Horowitz’ Magpie Murders, I remembered my training and said yes. Magpie Murders is a mystery novel within a mystery novel. Susan Ryeland is an editor at a small publishing house in London. She is the editor for […]

The First Half is Great

December 9, 2017 by Emmalita 7 Comments

I wanted to like this more than I did. It gets three stars because the front half is amazing. I’ll talk about what I didn’t like in the spoiler section. I’ve had this on my kindle for a long time, but there was always something I wanted to read more. In response to Harry and Megan’s engagement, people started bringing this book up again and I thought it would be a fun, light read. An American, Rebecca “Bex” Porter decides to do a semester abroad […]

Fucking Humans

December 9, 2017 by Emmalita Leave a Comment

John Scalzi has created a fascinating sci-fi universe in his Old Man’s War series. The Ghost Brigades is as much a horror story as a sci-fi adventure. Scalzi references Frankenstein repeatedly as he plants questions about the boundaries of being human, the ethics of creating life,  corporate control, and who we consider monsters. Scalzi presents some interesting and deep questions, but ultimately sidesteps the more problematic answers by wrapping up his stories with happyish endings. Which is fine. These days I’m reading for neater resolutions and happier endings. […]

Lunella! No!

November 30, 2017 by Emmalita Leave a Comment

My comic book reading is pretty scattershot. I have read zero of the Secret War series. I heard about it when Captain America was revealed to be a Hydra agent. I have no idea what’s going on in the main series. I did stumble across Secret Warriors, and thought I’d read it since it has a couple of my favorites, Ms. Marvel and Lunella and Devil Dinosaur. Joining them are other Inhumans – Daisy, also known as Quake, Inferno, and Karnak. Secret Empire bounces around in […]

Adventures of an Ethical Criminal

November 30, 2017 by Emmalita 5 Comments

Jasmine “Jazz” Bashara has lived in Artemis, the only lunar city, since she was 6. When we meet Jazz, she is in the process of failing her EVA Master exam, because she bought a used EVA suit and a piece of safety equipment has failed. Jazz is always looking to make money, and being able to take tourists from Earth on lunar tours outside the bubble would really set her up. Things don’t go according to plan. That’s a pattern in Jazz’ life – she’s […]
