Only aiming for a quarter Cannonball this year after miserably failing last year, but I've missed the CBR community and the great work done here!

A Quirky, Clean Romantic Comedy

April 10, 2016 by Ellepkay 1 Comment

This story was charming!  I’m sure it is shelved in the ‘Fiction’ section of the store rather than ‘Romance’ because it is written by a man!  And, there is really only a single main character (the man – Don) rather than a proper hero and heroine, and the story is told only in relation to him.  But it is the story of people looking for, and finding, love – so in my book it counts as romance. Don is a professor who leads a VERY […]

Fun. Poorly written fun.

March 28, 2016 by Ellepkay 1 Comment

Let me set the tone with this shining example of the prose we are dealing with: “Within Luc’s embrace, Jane’s heart shuddered and was helpless against the natural force that drew her to him.”  Guys, I do not normally read nonsense like this.  But, as I’ve said before, I have been looking for lighthearted contemporaries, and Rachel Gibson is an author referred to as ‘funny’.  Also – the hero is a hockey player.  I am a sucker for the hockey story. This book.  Man, this […]

A Comforting Sequel to an Excellent Book

March 19, 2016 by Ellepkay 2 Comments

Please consider this is less of a review and more of an advertisement. So, a kind of quirky feature of the romance genre is that typically each set of protagonists only gets one book.  (There is an exception known as the ‘slow burn’ where it takes several books for the leads to finally get together, but even then, they aren’t actively in a relationship during all those books).  More likely, if you are reading a series,  you can hold out the hope that you get […]

A Grown-Up M/M Romance

March 10, 2016 by Ellepkay 1 Comment

I took too long to write this review (I finished this book several weeks ago now), so it won’t be a thorough as I would like.  But, it was just too enjoyable not to share.  This book told my favorite kind of story.  A story of grown ups learning to love and live with each other, and how they support each other through life’s problems. Laurie Parker was a world class ballet dancer until he decided to try ballroom dancing in competition with another man.  […]

A Promising New (to me) Author

March 4, 2016 by Ellepkay 2 Comments

This book was a very pleasant surprise and a reminder of why I keep taking chances with new authors.  I don’t remember where I heard about Kelly Bowen, but I think she appeared on one of those “If you like ____, then you might like _____” lists.  My library does not have any of her books, and they cost more than I am willing to pay for a new author.  But, this little novella was only $1, so I decided to go for it. Viola […]

Where’s MY nickname?

March 1, 2016 by Ellepkay 4 Comments

This book was both better and worse than I expected.  And, at the same time, it was exactly what I expected.  Nate “Ghost” Wheeler is ex-military and works for Black Knights, Inc., a  government sanctioned independent contractor operation that “handle the jobs the government doesn’t want its name attached to” (or some nonsense like that).  Nate is recently back from a mission that went horribly wrong and his best friend, Grigg, ended up dead.  Nate has always had feelings for his best friend’s little sister, […]
