Cozy fantasy and Sci-fi are my self care reads. I love a good magic system and dragons are always welcome. I like my Sci-fi LGBTQ+ positive. YA and Romance fill a sweet spot. And I never underestimate good children's fiction! (Learn more about this Cannonballer: Dome’Loki's Quick Questions interview.)

A Conjuring of Light – consumed at nearly light speed

April 27, 2017 by Dome'Loki Leave a Comment

On April 20th I went to see the always highly entertaining John Scalzi at my local independent bookstore.  While waiting for him to autograph several books, I was perusing the shelves as the line slowly wound through the store.  When I got to the Fantasy “S” section, the spine of A Conjuring of Light, third book in the Shades of Magic series, smacked me in the eyeballs.  A Conjuring of Light is the sequel to A Gathering of Shadows, which I reviewed last year.  When I found AGoS it was […]

Beautiful tribute to Wonder Woman

April 19, 2017 by Dome'Loki Leave a Comment

For years my only knowledge of Jill Thompson was as the artist for the run of Sandman that is collected in Brief Lives, my favorite book of the series.  In 2015 she was a special guest of San Diego Comic Con and we had the pleasure of attending her panel.  Her panel was the first one of the day in that room and she was worried people wouldn’t come, so she brought doughnuts for those who did come.  In person she is funny, sweet and a […]

Thrilling Adventure, Math and History! – Lovelace and Babbage have never been so exciting

April 14, 2017 by Dome'Loki Leave a Comment

A friend gave me this book for my birthday last October.  At the time I didn’t look too closely at it and assumed it was a typical nonfiction book.  While I am interested in the subject, non-fiction tends to be lower on my priority list, so it got shelved with my TBR and we moved on to cake and board games.  Last month I wasn’t able to write my review for The Bear and the Nightingale right away so thought it would be best to read something […]

The Bear and the Nightingale – a Russian fairytale

April 5, 2017 by Dome'Loki 2 Comments

One of my favorite booksellers raved about “The Bear and the Nightingale” and chose it to be the featured for the month of January at my local independent bookstore.  The high praise moved it up on my TBR pile.  At the time of reading I was thoroughly captivated by this charming Russian fairytale but now that two weeks have passed and I’m sitting down to review, I find there isn’t much to say.  The Bear and the Nightingale feels like a reimagining of an old […]

Miranda and Caliban – what came before the tempest

March 20, 2017 by Dome'Loki 4 Comments

Jacqueline Carey has been one of my favorite authors for almost 16 years now, since the publishing of her first novel, “Kushiel’s Dart”.  Full disclosure; I am a full on fan girl who named my eldest daughter after one of Jacqueline’s characters.  I always get excited when she shares on her blog her current writing project.  In 2015 she announced that she had written a new book that would be a retelling of “The Tempest” but told from Miranda and Caliban’s perspective.  However, due to […]

Half the World – not half as interesting as the 1st book in series

March 8, 2017 by Dome'Loki 1 Comment

I thoroughly enjoyed the first book in the Shattered Sea trilogy, Half a King and gave it a four star review.  In the comments, narfna said, “I LOVED this book. The sequels were a bit disappointing for me, though.”  Uh oh.  After taking a non-fiction break, I picked up Half the World with a tiny bit of doubt that I would enjoy it as much as the first.  While I can’t speak for book three yet, I did find Half the World a bit disappointing.  I give […]
