My husband Jason and I are wonder twin cancer survivors! Sadly, all the radiation did not make us bionic...yet. I've done two quarter Cannonballs successfully now, and this year I'm going for a half. (Learn more about this Cannonballer: Debcapsfan's Quick Questions interview.)

I’m on a Horse!

April 1, 2016 by Debcapsfan 2 Comments

I picked up this book because I saw it on a list of books you should read despite the terrible cover. This cover is terrible, there’s a woman kneeling at the feet of a man on a horse doing his best “I am a noble hero pose” and she’s reaching up to polish his boots with a look that says “Tada!, here’s this douche.” I found this book…meh, I guess. I suppose it is a sign that I bought it and read it in January […]

Killing them with Kindness

March 25, 2016 by Debcapsfan Leave a Comment

The Goblin Emperor won the Locus Award for Best Fantasy novel. It is a novel that I will definitely go back and listen to the audio narration of since there are a lot of names and places that do not roll of the tongue. The writing is really beautiful, and I enjoyed the court setting with a touch of steampunk thrown in the story. Maia is the fourth son of the King of the Elflands, born to a Goblin mother and banished from court with […]

World Building for Dummies

March 4, 2016 by Debcapsfan Leave a Comment

This is not meant to be a criticism of this book, which I enjoyed, but to say that world building, especially for dystopian future worlds, is very challenging. Red Queen won the 2015 Goodreads Choice Award for Debut Goodreads Author. I read the book description and although I am leery of YA dystopian series, I decided to give it a shot. I’ve read a few of these book series post Hunger Games, and this one I’ve found is the best at fleshing out both the […]

A Delightful Regency Fantasy Novel

February 9, 2016 by Debcapsfan 2 Comments

Sorcerer to the Crown is a Best Book of 2015 from NPR. I found it on their Book Concierge, and the description of the book, set in Regency England with magic, sounded delightful. The book tells the story of Zacharias Wythe, the Royal Sorcerer of England, who came to the post when his adoptive father, Sir Stephen, died. He was a slave as a child, and his adoptive father rescued him and trained him to use magic. Zacharias faces opposition to his position from magic […]

I finally joined the Rainbow Rowell fanclub

January 8, 2016 by Debcapsfan 7 Comments

Somehow I missed the Rainbow Rowell is great fan train. I read all the glowing reviews on the Cannonball and never got around to reading anything by her. I had been seeing some retweets of hers on my Twitter feed and liked them, so I decided to read Fangirl. And I’m sad it took me this long to read it, because I inhaled it. It was so great. Is it possible I have peaked and read my favorite book of the year already? Possibly, yes. […]

A long time ago this show was so good

November 23, 2015 by Debcapsfan Leave a Comment

I loved Veronica Mars the television show so much, but I must confess, I haven’t seen the movie. I had a baby that January, and my March just went by in a blur of no sleep. Now that I’ve read the books I should really go back and watch it. I did spoil myself with some major plot points from the movie since the first book takes place right after the movie. I liked the mystery plot in the book, and I thought it was […]
