Bone of the Rings!

December 23, 2014 by anevilweasel Leave a Comment

Yes this is like Tolkien!  a bit….in a graphic novel…with perhaps a bit more humor but also with depth and ancient evil and dragons and plot twists and cow racing! This was another recommendation from iO9. Graphic Novel. HUGE fat thing at 1300 pages -it’s the compilation of ALL the Bone comics which were apparently released over 10 years – 1994-2004.    An epic fantasy saga – very funny, clever, good story telling.   To summarize: “After being run out of Boneville, the three Bone […]

Unique World Building.

December 19, 2014 by anevilweasel Leave a Comment

This is a really unique book – recommended by iO9.   (recommend io9.com )   It’s magic and it’s a bit steampunk but it’s also quite a bit modern in its thinking. No “medieval fantasy tropes” here. Our hero is Tara  – recently graduated (and tossed out – literally) from the Hidden Schools as a “Craftswoman” – a type of magician. Very very skilled and smart.   She makes her way home to the dirt town she grew up in to recover, but that doesn’t last […]

Sci-Fi retelling of the Cinderella tale

December 19, 2014 by anevilweasel Leave a Comment

This is a retelling of the Cinderella tale which takes place in a far future on Earth in a place called “New Beijing”. Cinder is a Cyborg;  a brilliant mechanic who works in the marketplace as the (apparently) sole source of income for her stepmother and sisters.   She was adopted into her family by the father, who had the misfortune (of course) to die immediately afterward of a very fatal plague.  Of course the family falls upon hard times and of course the stepmother and at […]

Don’t Blink in Wink…New Mexico.

December 12, 2014 by anevilweasel 1 Comment

This is a little bit like “Pleasantville” (or the Stepford Wives) meets “The XFiles”  plus a police procedural with a touch of Horror.  Hard to classify. Mona Bright is a troubled ex-cop who inherits her long dead mother’s home in Wink, New Mexico.  She doesn’t know much about her mom – mental illness, suicide, not much more. Mom died a long time ago and the house only reverted to Mona after her fathers death.  Turns out, that her mom used to work at the quantum research […]

Sudden Death Is a Normal Way of Life on Spatterjay…

December 12, 2014 by anevilweasel 1 Comment

Neal Asher is truly one of the greats when it comes to unique Science Fiction and “The Skinner” is at the top of that list. The story takes place on the planet of Spatterjay, a watery  world that hosts extremely weird and vicious native fauna, all of which is infected with a virus that makes them virtually invulnerable to harm. Most of the few human inhabitants on the planet live in a protected “Dome” and avoid contact with the wildlife. If the wildlife doesn’t kill you, it will infect you with […]

Let’s see… Steampunk, alternate Victorian London, Reptilian Royalty, diabolical Anarchists .
