My father-in-law recommended this book, the first in the Destroyermen series, to me. We both enjoy sci-fi and military history, so he thought this alternate-history novel, with WWII-era tech and dinosaurs, would be fun for me. What he doesn’t know is that I also enjoy the Honor Harington books, which are basically naval battles in space (based loosely on the Horatio Hornblower books). All that to say – I’m predisposed to enjoying this kind of thing. And I did! 
Written by a weapons historian, Into the Storm is a fun smash-the-toys-together story. Matty Reddy captains the U.S.S. Walker, an already out-of-date destroyer in the Pacific Theater in WWII. While engaged in battle with some Japanese ships, the Walker steams straight into a storm for some temporary cover. It’s not just any storm, though: The Walker floats out of the storm, and everyone else is…not there. The battle-worn Walker limps back two a safe harbor, only to find the harbor missing. Instead, they find some large amphibious creatures and no real signs of human civilization. What is going on?
Captain Reddy has to maintain discipline and figure out how to keep his crew motivated and safe while they figure out where they are. Or perhaps, when they are…
I don’t want to give much more away because I think the revelations unfold pretty nicely. And, the back of the book doesn’t give much more away, either. What I will say is that the Walker gets a chance to do its thing against some interesting enemies.
3.5/5, rounded down. It’s a fun read, and I’ll keep on reading the series. If you like the world building of the John Carter of Mars series, or the details in the Honorverse, or made-for-tv sci-fi movies, you will probably enjoy this. If you’ve got an ear for dialogue and a heart for life-like characters, maybe sit this one out.
