In 2020, Wonky Donkey by Craig Smith came out. In 2022 Gomer the Gassy Goat: A Fart Filled Tale by Hayley Rose came out. They are the same book in all forms except one is about a gassy goat and the other a wonky donkey. Okay not exactly alike, but the “House that Jack Built” concept is prominent in both as are the concepts.
Why do I mention a four and six year old book? Because in mid-October 2026 Gomer the Gassy Goat: A Fart Filled Tale will be re-released. (Although, as they are the same author, but different illustrators, I am assuming that they are the same.) The differences are what Nicola Anderson’s illustrations add to the story. And that is they add what they add. I am not exactly a fan, but I like the concept of “building on” the story as you repeat the previous parts to make a classy, sassy, gassy tongue twister with the goofy images. This keeps the very bouncy and lightheartedness of things.
Anderson’s images are cartoonish, not really solid and look flat. They do, however, have some nice color and a few obvious but cute farts… I mean parts. (Okay, I mean farts.) The one image I am a bit disappointed in is the one where the chicken is really tooting up a storm, as birds don’t toot. Just ask Jim Benton or more accurately their book, Jop and Blip Wanna Know #1: Can You Hear a Penguin Fart on Mars?: And Other Excellent Questions.
