We did it, Team! Our Davi is now Dark Lord Davi Morrigan Skulltaker, First of Her Name, Ruler of Wilders, Slayer of Beasts! Unfortunately, the win comes with the mandate to “kill all humans,” which is a problem because Davi is not a genocidal maniac.
In this second book of the Dark Lord Davi series, Davi and her friends try to keep those wilders who are genocidal from succeeding in their maniacal goals. This means working with the humans she gave up on in the first book. Sadly, the humans are led by a murder-loving Duke and his equally murder-y crew of murderers, the Guildblades. Essentially, both sides want nothing more than to eradicate the other and Davi, a human with Wilder abilities, is stuck in the middle.
On top of her peace-keeping efforts, Davi also works to figure out the mystery of her hundreds of lives over the past thousand years. How did she end up in this unnamed land? Why is she stuck in a time loop? Why did the time loop change the last time she died? And why does she only remember snippets of her life before, things like the A-Team theme song and that Darth Vader is Jesus’ father?
Like the first book, “Everybody Wants to Rule the Word Except Me” is filled equally with action and curse words. It’s funny, irreverent and more than a little raunchy. But, also like the first book, it’s quite charming in places. In this book especially, we really see Davi’s growth, as her relationships go from minions to friends. And she resists banging everything she can get her tongue on.
Final Verdict: 3 stars, a solidly funny adventure
CRB18 Bingo Circle: “Middle” because Davi is stuck in the middle of the humans and Wilders.
