I love a good road trip book. People jammed into a car on a mission to get somewhere. There can be conflict among passengers, vehicle breakdowns, small towns, and meeting unusual people along the way (sometimes all in the first chapter!)
In trying to select books to recommend, I realized how different a road trip book can be depending upon the reason for the trip, the age and relationship of the passengers, the year the book is set in, and the location of the journey. Here is my list:
- Run for the Hills by Kevin Wilson – a funny, touching story of a teen looking for the father who abandoned him.
- West with Giraffes by Lynda Rutledge – historical fiction about the cross-country journey of a pair of giraffes during the Great Depression.
- The Lincoln Highway by Amor Towles – a 1950s coming of age road trip.
- The Remains of the Day by Kazuo Ishiguro – a 1950s British road trip where a butler reflects upon his life.
- Plan A by Deb Caletti – a romantic road trip for a teen seeking an abortion (I kid you not).
- The Road to Tender Hearts by Annie Hartnett – an old mans heads cross country to reunite with his high school crush.
- Mrs. Endicott’s Splendid Adventure by Rhys Bowen – in 1938, when Mrs. Endicott’s husband dumps her, she steals his Bentley and heads for France.
Now if you want to stretch the definition of a road trip to be less literal, here are a few others to consider:
- The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams – after Earth is destroyed, the last surviving human takes a very funny journey through space.
- Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir – a road trip into space to save our planet.
- The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry by Rachel Joyce – a cross country British adventure by foot.
