Wow. This was perfect from beginning to end. It’s been a while since we had Eve looking for a suspect that she wanted to save in the end. The story breaks your heart from beginning to end. And I found myself rooting for the “bad” guy in this one. I do have to say though, I hope this is the last we have to hear about Peabody and Mavis’s house. I just can not care about it anymore.
Fury in Death begins a bit differently than other In Death books. We start off following someone who is happy, has a discovery that is world changing. And then in a moment, they lose it all, and fury is born. Fast forward decades later and we have Eve called into an accidental death, and then into one that is a straight homicide. She finds a man, Larry Chu, locked in a room and beaten to death. And beaten is not even the world, his whole body looks as if a car ran over him multiple times. Eve has to wonder what could Larry have done that would have caused this. And when the bodies start piling up, Eve is driven to focus on a company and something that may have global wide implications.
Things that I loved. Summerset and Galahad honestly. There were some poignant and funny scenes with them, Eve, and Roarke. And then of course Eve and Roarke. We see Eve wrestling with trying to save someone who doesn’t want to be saved. And Roarke who gets a little involved in this one, but not as much as he usually does in other books.
We also get the usual suspects, Nadine, Peabody, the squad, Dr. Mira, etc. I think now this is the second book in a row we get Charles and Louise which is nice.
The flow of the book really starts off strong and doesn’t let up. I kept hoping the “bad” guy wouldn’t get caught.
I also thought that there were some call-outs as one says about the current Congress, administration, etc. (this takes place in the future, but I can see she was throwing swipes, especially at the Senator from Alabama).
We get an overly long party scene along with a birth and honestly, I would be happy skipping this stuff. It just feels a bit….saccharine and I don’t know, I never found it to be realistic with the character of Mavis, but ah well.
The ending was really good. I wish we had gotten some scenes with the family members of some of these men. I am always curious about the fallouts from Eve’s cases, and this one I definitely am curious about. Really strong installment in the series, I couldn’t put it down.
- Craft – boats; knitting; a character makes something; this book is a good example (or bad example) of the craft of writing. Well she’s been going for 63 novels now, so think this is a good example of the craft of writing.
