Well this had an interesting premise (what if messages you meant to be sent after you died get sent before you do?) and then it just had way too much nonsense with a relationship that never felt realized throughout the book. Also, the main character, Sara sucks in my mind. I just got tired of her not even a quarter into the book. All in all, just a so-so romance novel.
One Last Word follows Sara Chae, who recently quits her job when her bosses don’t believe in her app called “One Last Word.” When she and her sister have an alcohol fueled night, Sarah wakes up to find out that the app went haywire and accidentally linked to the death of another woman named Sarah Chae and sent her last word to her former bosses, landlord, friends, and family. Also, one of the emails goes to her high school crush, Harry. Sara deals with the fallout from all of that, but also has to deal with the fact that she gets picked for a mentorship at a venture capitalist firm and the mentor she is assigned is Harry.
That reads like there is a lot going on in this book, but it’s honestly not. The majority of the book is Sara interacting with Harry, crushing on him still, and being upset when he mentions dating other people and not wanting to be married again. And I have to say, it made zero sense to me why Sara was even into him. They had zero chemistry. Most of their scenes involved him eating food. I didn’t buy she had a thing for him or vice versa. If I don’t believe in the romantic relationship the book is trying to sell me, then it just becomes a so so book right there.
What made this one even worse was some of the dialogue read like it was written by Chat GPT. There’s a scene in the book where Sara confronts her sister about something and the dialogue was so clunky and unrealistic I could barely keep reading. Same thing happened when Sara and her former best friend meet up.
There’s HEA, but by then I just wanted to move on from this one. Sadly, I bought this one, and won’t do that again in the future. If I get curious about any of her books in the future, I will just borrow them from the library.
