Bingo: Justice
I saw the movie Mystic River, based on Dennis Lehane’s novel of the same name, years ago. I remember thinking it was very good. I forgot most of the plot, so I picked the book up.
The story features Jimmy, an ex-con. When he was young, his friends Sean and Danny were playing when a car pulls up to them. The men inside kidnap Danny and he escapes four days later, having been sexually abused.
The book then jumps 25 years in the future. Jimmy is out of jail. Sean has become a cop. Danny is married and desperately, secretly trying to resist becoming what the two men who kidnapped him were.
Jimmy’s teenage daughter Katie is murdered and Sean and his partner catch the case. Danny eventually becomes a suspect, having come home the night of Katie’s murder covered in blood. The story follows the three childhood friends as the case unfolds.
I thought the book was a solid thriller. It was well written, if a little clumsy in places. The characters were well drawn and the ending satisfying. I think I liked the movie a bit better, but would still recommend.
