The Dinner Party is a Pick Your Poison Adventure book. You are broke and about to be kicked out of your apartment by your roommate. You get a choice of taking on a waitressing gig that your friend calls you about at a remote home in the mountains or trying to figure out something else for money. Heck, you even get the chance to stand up to your roommate, feed a cat, and even pick up a hitchhiker.
I can’t lie, this is probably one of my favorite reads by McFadden over the last few years. It’s a 3.5 star read, but I gave it 4 stars. It’s a choose your own adventure thriller/suspense/horror book and I got a kick out of it. I think if you do them right, it’s a fun way to keep readers going back and forth to see what the possible endings are. McFadden says upfront there are 22, and I got up to 15 before I put this aside. The main reason why it’s a 3.5 star read for me though was that I wish that McFadden had made sure each of the endings were fulfilling. Some were pretty short and to the point. And some were long and drawn out. I also think this is the first time she dipped her toes into fantasy/horror. There were some plot points that I think we’re definitely getting her poking fun at some of the books in this genre, but think it be fun to have her do a true horror book to just break up the monotony of the thriller books she’s pumping out.
