Lately it seems like my really fun reads are all coming later than sooner. Take The Flip-Flop Alphabet: A Book of Word Choices book which is due November 2026. And here I have a reader’s copy in March 2026 making me feel that is is not fair to y’all to have to wait for this clever and fun alphabet book. The concept of using words more mature than those in a typical alphabet allows for the child’s growth and the introduction of new concepts. I would have liked a pronunciation guide for the letter X though! My one complaint is that the images might be slightly geared toward a younger audience, though, the theme is for multiple ages. You can see by the cover how young, cute and silly things might be and that would turn off some of the older readers.
I would say this is an all ages book because you can teach the concepts to a younger reader, but it would be great for a teacher in their classroom or a person who collects alphabet books. One part I particularly enjoyed is that each letter has two concepts. The first is a positive word with the letter, the other word is a more negative word. The positive word comes first and then on the next page, the second word. It is fun for adults and a great way to introduce opposites as well.
And though I do think that Nathaniel Eckstrom’s illustrations are on the younger side of things, I do enjoy them. They are upbeat and are a nice mix of details and are not overly crowded. The pastel and softer colors are perfect for not taking away from the text and keep one engaged. And while there is not a traditional story, duopress labs makes things flow as if it is fiction or or read as a typical book.
