I Did Not Finish at 37 percent.
Sigh. I don’t know. I either love John Scalzi or am totally baffled at what he is trying to do and find myself getting irritated. I was always wary of space operas, but for the most part really enjoy them now due to The Murderbot series. And I did love the first book in Scalzi’s Old Man’s War. But it’s been hit or miss with me the past few years because it seems to me most of his books are just satire/trying to be funny and I get aggravated trying to follow things. He had a 15 line freaking sentence in one of his chapters. I couldn’t even understand what was happening for the most part outside of moon changes to cheese.
I think there were about 20 plus characters running around at one point and nothing felt connected, but every person seemed to be a really bad caricature. I felt like I was a kid again and watching The Mystery Science Channel and some random movie comes on and you can see someone with a pole holding up a fake moon. And I was supposed to suspend disbelief and be like, that’s not a fake moon, it’s real. I felt like I was reading a fake book and just could not deal with it. At this point, I have to be better about DNFing something that is not working for me earlier. I stopped and started this book like 5 times last year, I kept borrowing it from the library and never finishing it because the first two chapters were just not it. Next time, I will trust my gut and just move on.
