I really liked the first Unicorn Boy by Dave Roman. It was both new and fresh, plus also familiar. I liked that combination. The fantasy elements are fun, the LGBTQ elements on point, I thought the humor was mostly laughing out loud. Sure, some were a bit “kid centered” but that doesn’t mean an adult could like it. Then I read via an online reader Unicorn Boy and the Slumber Party of Doom! (Unicorn Boy #2) by Dave Roman. It is due in early May 2026 which gives me time to read book one again and pick up a few pieces I had forgotten. You see there is a large plot point I completely forgot about! But don’t worry fellow book lovers who are reading this, I remembered it fast enough.
The build up was fun, the fight scene(s) were clever, but the cliff hanger was less satisfying than book one. Overall, I enjoy the series. I will find book three and like promoting and recommending this book to the 7-to-12 crowd. This large age group allows for all types of readers, due to fantasy action, might not be for the too young or sensitive reader. The older ages are for the lower readers but want a little more in the way of concepts).
The one concept that is good, but could be better is how we follow our Unicorn Boy hero on his adventures and then have a “meanwhile back at the ranch” switch. The Unicorn Boy part of things are good, mostly filling
in the information you need, but the friends of UB do not have as fleshed out stories. They seem to come to rescue the DID (Damsel in Distress) at the last minute, but could have a lot to offer. Anyway, in the grand scheme of things, that is somewhat mild as I know that the proper audience will love the Cat-Angle BFF coming in to help stop the bad guy, guys or gal, gals. Or even unicorn, muffin, or one bad case of upset stomach.
If you’re looking for an book to read after all the BatCat stories by Meggie Ramm.
