Disclaimer: I think this will be the third time I have attempted participating in the Cannonball Read. My failures in the past are so frustrating to me because I easily read at least 50 books each year. It’s the reviews that are my stumbling block.
I know it’s because I am intimidated, both by the intelligence of the Pajiba community and by my minimal skills with technology. This year, I’m trying to let that anxiety go. If my reviews sound like they were written by a fourth grader, then so be it.
Happy Cannonball Read everyone!
Format in which I consumed this book: audiobook
Did I like it/love it/hate it? Liked it enough to be disappointed the next book in the series wasn’t immediately available at my library.
What’s it about? Geez, I don’t remember! I’m writing this a few weeks after I finished reading so I’m gonna have to refresh my memory here.
Ok, it’s coming back to me a little bit.
In this world, humans and werewolves are kind of at war. Princess Aurora, who is a people pleaser when it comes to her uncaring father, is about to marry a guy who is clearly an asshole. Her father needs the help of the army this asshole can provide so Aurora has agreed to the arrangement. Humans capture werewolves (in their human form) and make them do gladiator-type fights. Aurora attends a fight and spares the life of a young wolf. This catches the eye of the male main character (also a werewolf, if that wasn’t obvious) whose name I cannot remember.
Anyway, the MMC had let himself get captured on purpose for these fights. I’m sorry, I can’t remember for what purpose. (Oh man, I’m really selling this book, aren’t I?) As the MMC breaks himself and the younger guy out of their cages, Aurora leaves with him. This then looks like the werewolves have kidnapped her, so the asshole and his men chase after them.
The group meets up with more werewolves and they head north to rendezvous with the wolf king. Aurora plans to essentially spy and report back to her father, who does not deserve this level of devotion, but of course she ends up developing feelings for the MMC.
Some stuff happens on the way, which I can only vaguely remember. That’s the gist of it though.
My thoughts: The narrators for this were both a teensy bit annoying. The man was attempting to be intense and growly so sometimes I had to turn the volume really high to understand what he was saying. The woman is a little harder to explain. There were times when she was also reading in a more dramatic way and I felt that the story didn’t really need that level of intensity at that time.
The story itself was good. If you read a lot of these types of fantasy stories you’ll see the ‘twist’ coming. I hesitate to call this a romantasy because the smut level was very low.
Would I recommend this to my sister? Yes, probably. I recently was surprised to learn that she read and enjoyed the Court of Thorns and Roses series. Everything I’ve seen her read has been a bit more snooty and highbrow than that.
So that’s review #1 in the bag. Fingers crossed I can keep this up!
