After reading several sobering, spooky, or downright heart-wrenching post-apocalypse stories, these two short novellas were a breath of fresh air. Do you want a story about a planet where humans avoided the apocalypse, barely, and have figured out how to give everyone what they need? Do you want a charming robot (who also has everything he needs) and is meeting humans for the first time in over 200 years? Do you want friendship and adventure with no anxiety?
I ready these back to back and gotta say I enjoyed the first one more. Dex is endearing and relatable in his anxiety about his life choices, and Mosscap the robot’s charm and earnestness frequently made me chuckle. They find each other in a truly dangerous situation where they can help each other, and they discover that they can be friends.
The second book is about Dex introducing Mosscap to human society. They learn about each other, with frequent surprises, and face their own ignorance. I felt like there was a lot about Dex’s family and love interests but it didn’t really deliver on the hints in the first book about what actually happened in the near-apocalypse.
Still charming and an easy light-hearted read, recommend if you are looking for a break in your dim apocalypse reads.
