IT IS A BOOK ABOUT FARTS! And burps, and slime, barf, hooting, hollering and…. Lots of other gross stuff and seemingly rude stuff that animals do to protect themselves, capture prey or trying to survive, but not to be rude like we humans have learned these acts are. The first few pages were about the slimers such as the clownfish and a worm that not only looks like a million miles of… um poop… it smells it too!
What book am I talking about? How Rude!: Animals That Burp, Toot, Spit, and Screech to Survive by Chana Stiefel and Anna Louise Oliver as the illustrator. We follow slimers with burpers and farters. Birds don’t fart, but zebras do (especially when startled). Cows and similar creatures produce so much methane it is helping to cause climate change.
We then follow up with… okay I’ll stop there. I don’t want to ruin the fun for you. And not only are you going to have fun learning how the animal kingdom seems rude(but really isn’t) we meet a few people (or scientists) that have fun with these creatures, too. After the chapter we have an interview with a scientist who talks about slime (like how snails and cosmetics come together) or poop, snakes, herpetology and so much more. There are all types of scientific facts (some I knew and new ones). Plus, not only are there scientific facts about each animal, there are sidebars with more farts… I mean facts.
Having only started chapter two, I knew I would really enjoy this (due in mid November 2025, read via an online reader copy) book. The interviews have photographs of the scientist and the creature they are talking about. However, the actual illustrations were not my favorite part. They are a bit too cartoon and the lack of realism does take away from some of the enjoyment of them for me. However, not seeing a more realistic Mucus Making Bootlace worm (at 50 feet) was a relief!
Now off to the spitters…I see you scytodidaes…… !
