I read Transformers: Worst Bot Ever: Meet Ballpoint via an online reader copy. And to be honest, I am glad I did. I am a fan of the old Transformer cartoon of the 1980s. I never got into the other shows or movies, but an occasional story/graphic novel is not off the table. But I know that my nephew is a fan and I am always looking for something that is not only appealing to him, but not too kid-like or too mature.
Brian “Smitty” Smith created a book that is not for the sophisticated reader, but the one that loves a good, goofy (and I mean goofy) story. It is slapstick as a ballpoint-robot pen tries to impress his fellow Transformers (first Decepticons, then Autobots) with their not so brave or impressive deeds. But of course, there is a place for him in the ranks of the good-guys because everyone has a talent, even if they are a “just” a pen.
And of course, Marz Jr. brings in the fun with simpler illustrations that are not overly detailed, but not minimalistic. There is color but not overwhelming. It lends more fuel to flame the silliness of the text. The characters are nothing fantastic, but are not just “robots/vehicles” so there is a little personality as well. But still, nothing towards the wow factor for me. When this book comes out (mid/later July 2025) if you are a massive fan, or have an aged (strong 6 to 8) 8 to 10-year-old you who is a massive fan, you should purchase it. If the child is not a huge fan, or you’re not a huge fan, but are interested in Transformers and reading, then this graphic novel is perfect for a library read.
