The use of color has been used before as a theme, but to show that there are colors that are in-between the stereotypical ones is fresh. The Sky Is Not Blue is a cute, simple story that allows us to see that not only are we using our imagination, we are using it in real-life situations. It shows the power of art, color and looking at things a little differently (even if that means sitting in the little chair and not the big teacher chair).
Joy Jones has written a story that on the surface has multiple levels. The main one is the story, of course, and the look is the other. The story seems simple on the surface, and it is. Therefore it can work well for younger listeners. But the idea of art and the concepts (blending of colors, the fact the sky can be so many colors, like gray, blue, or even pinks) is for the older child. The look is bold and blasting off the page. There is enough white space/area so that Sawyer Cloud’s illustrations will bloom. They look like you can almost touch them.
Due in late October/early November 2024 (and read via an online reader copy) this book could make a nice holiday gift for your child, your personal library (if you, the adult, are into art), your child’s teacher(s) and local libraries. It is poetic, but not poetry and even though it highlights the love of art, even not art readers/listeners can enjoy it.
