I’m a Black Hole by Eve M. Vavagiakis and Jessica Lanan being the illustrator, is currently available, but I read via an online reader copy. And I think twice. This might sound like, since I can’t remember it, that I did not like it, and maybe the first time it didn’t “grab my attention,” but this time around I appreciated it more. And that is why I should allow myself to read again, but there are so many new books out there. Like I’m a Neutrino: Tiny Particles on a Big Universe (also by Vavagiakis, but illustrated by Ilze Lemesis). However, I did not have a copy of that, so I will write my review on the other.
The book on being a black hole, is a rhyming picture book that allows for the younger reader, or the reader who is being introduced to the subject, access to black holes. Especially since we are unable to actually have access! The images are rich, deep, colorful and cool. They are earthy tones, but also use brightness and “light points” to accent what is important and what needs to be highlighted. The afterwards takes each page and gives a scientific addition with a paragraph of facts..
Overall, this book (and I’m assuming neutrino) would work well in almost any aged classroom, or for a child you want to get into space. The text and illustrations are accessible, allowing you to picture the theme. My store will be hosting the author in a virtual author event mid/late May for the schools and I’m excited that the kids will be able to hear first hand about the book.
