This book was recommended to me by a friend, who doesn’t usually share my taste in books, but I decided to read it anyway and was kind of disappointed.
The Marrow Thieves is dystopian, so I expected it to be right up my alley, but when I read it I was surprised. It’s set at an undefined time in the future where everyone except the Native people have lost the ability to dream. Their ability to dream is stored in their bone marrow so the government, inspired by history, sets up “schools” where the Natives are taken to get their bone marrow harvested. Francis (nicknamed Frenchie or French) is on the run so he doesn’t end up in a “school” with a group of other Natives.
That’s it. He’s on the run for most of the book, something interesting or unexpected sometimes happens but a lot of the plot is just people running and hiding, which I didn’t find to be very interesting. I didn’t hate it enough to stop reading it, and I was kind of curious about the ending, but I found myself checking how much I had left a lot, and I kind of just wanted to move on to a more interesting book.
I think my dislike for this might be because the two books I read before were very action packed (Dry and Internment), and maybe they were running for less than I think they were, and more interesting things happened than I think, but at least in the beginning I found it to be a lot of running and not a lot of action. I’d give it 2 stars, 2.5 if I’m feeling generous, but I just found it to be kind of boring.
