This book is set in a modern day workplace, specifically a PR company. The main character, Gerald, is an everyday office worker at the company, not too significant. One day, he is sucked into Slack. He has to learn to navigate his new world with no external stimulus. His productivity is through the roof, so no one argues with it. As he begins to panic and search for help, there seems to be more afoot in this company than just the PR disaster caused by the poisoning of dogs…
This book was an idea I’ve never seen before in a book, with all of the writing being done in the form of Slack messages. Gerald is honestly one of the most relatable characters I’ve ever seen, consistently reacting as an actual human would: with panic. There are also so many plotlines in this book, and almost none of them are explained because none of them are looking for answers, just a way out. There are also many times within the book that interactions just hit so hard, directly targeting my soul with how desperate some of those messages were. The final thing I adored is a bit of a spoiler, so I’ll be vague. The way the author conveys the things Gerald and his coworkers go through without directly saying it is so creative. One of the only things I didn’t like about this book was that it was hard to keep track of the characters at first, as there were no descriptions, only names from their Slack messages.
This was an excellent book, about 3.5 stars that I definitely recommend. There was so much more going on than I said, but I didn’t want to spoil too much.
