I recently ‘retired’ due to health reasons, and this was the first book I’ve read since that I couldn’t put down, and I didn’t have to! That’s a pretty cool feeling. One of my medications forbids me to eat for half an hour after taking it, so I’ve been taking it, reading for 30 minutes, then reading some more when I finally get breakfast. It’s awesome.
Apollo and Emma have what they think is a lovely normal life, including Baby Brian. When Emma starts acting strangely, it doesn’t take long for things to spiral out of control. TRIGGER AND SPOILER ALERT: Emma kills Brian, and when Apollo asks, “What did you do to our baby?” she says, “That wasn’t a baby.” She then runs away and disappears, and it’s up to Apollo to figure out if Emma was crazy, if Emma was right, and if he wants to find her. It leads him on a dangerous tour through the unknown parts of New York City, answering questions he never even knew he had.
The characters are wonderful, with believable flaws where you want to root for them anyway. The writing kept me guessing, and after a while I stopped trying to guess what would happen next. I can see why Cannonballers are such LaValle fans, and I will definitely check out more. (And if I had Apple plus, I would check out the show based on this book!)
