I am so excited about this book, y’all. I’ve been gushing about it in all my book-related chats since I started listening to it. I set it aside yesterday with about 80% finished because I wanted it to last just a little bit longer. It has been an exciting and fun escape during the awful end of summer break.
A team of female assassins are set to retire and to celebrate, their employers “The Museum” have sent them on a fancy shmancy cruise. While sitting in a walk-in to tame a hot flash, one of the women notices a fellow Museum employee, obviously on the job, and quickly realizes her team is the target. From there, it’s nonstop action as these sixty-something women evade the lucrative contracts on their lives while trying to find a way out of the situation. Interspersed are scenes from their lives as elite killers – training and jobs and choices made along the way.
What I appreciated most is that each woman was different without feeling like cookie cutter stereotypes (except when the job required it). They’re dealing with the issues of aging and it creates some very funny, very frank moments. I also thought the action scenes were well-written, I could follow what was happening in the fights and they felt dangerous and urgent. The twists and turns worked for me, I bought the story the whole way through. This is also very much a stand-alone, though I’d love to have more books featuring this cast. I read so much genre fiction that ends up being endless series commitments – it’s nice to have an ending every now and again.
I listened to the audio version and really enjoyed it, but I’m sure it’d be just as compelling in print. Part of the dedication in the author’s note at end was for angry women, which y’all know is my actual jam. 4.5/5, pick it up.
