Whisper is a Hound, an elite assassin controlled by blood magic. It’s the only life he’s known. And his latest mission comes with a reward he’s been waiting for. It’s an unusual mission though. Whisper is to infiltrate the court of Prince Julian Sandry, keep him alive until the signal comes, then kill the prince when the signal comes. Getting into the playboy prince’s good graces isn’t the hard part. But Whisper quickly finds that beneath the playboy façade, Julian is smart, warm, and caring, and Whisper can’t help getting more than a little attached to his target. He doesn’t see any way for this to end except in tragedy, not when failing his mission means something worse than his death, but Julian’s more than willing to fight for them both.
This was a pleasant surprise. As much as I try not to judge a book by its cover, it does effect my opinion sometimes, and I wasn’t certain what I was getting myself into. I love a good fantasy romance, but I seem to have trouble finding ones that actually work for me. This one did. Both Whisper and Julian were great characters, and Julian turned out to be much more likable than a lot of playboy characters are. The worldbuilding was strong as well, and I like the way a number of the issues were handled. The story itself was satisfying even if some elements were slightly predictable, and while I didn’t mind where it ended, I could have definitely read more about the characters. It was an enjoyable read when I just wanted something on the lighter side and would make for a good comfort read. I’ll definitely be checking out the other books in this series. Four out of five stars.
