Legends & Lattes by Travis Baldree has been all over Cannonball Read the past couple of years, and given my penchant for comforting reads involving warm beverages, I knew that there was a good chance I would love it. Spoiler alert: I did!
The story opens as Viv, an orc who is a ferocious and skilled warrior-for-hire, finishes up her final job and marches away from her crew. Following her heart and a spell, Viv finds the perfect spot to start putting down roots – and fulfill her dream to open her very own cafe! Viv faces a variety of challenges, including converting her space, finding reliable business partners (and friends/potential love interests!), dealing with the local gang, and facing off against a disgruntled former coworker. Most of all, though, the challenge Viv faces is to teach herself a new way of living and solving problems, without violence.
I adored this book, and it was very much in the spirit of my beloved Becky Chambers: exploring how pursuing a quiet, peaceful life is admirable and valid, and how joyfully consuming a warm beverage can be the highest ambition you hold. Comfort is king, you (yes, you!) are enough, and it’s okay to forgive yourself for your past. I enjoyed following along with Viv as she embarked on the ultimate adventure: opening her heart to true friendship and finding the perfect baked good to pair with a fresh cup of coffee.
I Highly recommend Legends & Lattes for a quick comfort read, although it may be best enjoyed once we’re past the heat of summer so you can get truly cozy with it!
