You know me, I like good humor. Of course, offbeat humor is best. And when I find a book that is called When Grandma Burnt Her Bra and it is a picture book, you know I am all over that!
OMG, how did this one get past the censors? Samantha Tidy must have some gal-friends in high places! When the young granddaughter of the story and her grandmother start on the subject of women’s rights and feminism, watch out you dinosaurs! These women are loud and proud! They are going to tell you about how marching, burning, hooting and hollering gets the job done! And do not worry if things are not completely equal, yet, this Grandma is making sure the next generation is prepared. And boy is she! Our young girl is riled up and loaded for bear!
Overall, the serious subject is done in an extremely humorous way, but it does not sugar coat things. It might be a good book for an adult friend who has done a bra burning or two, but of course, you need to get those daughters, granddaughters, and in some cases great-granddaughters ready to fight.
Aśka was an illustrator I was not aware of before this (or at least I am pretty sure) but they know how to draw themselves a feisty grandmother, and some dinosaurs in need of educating! Things fit the text, with just enough details, the right colors, and lines that are not sharp, but not cozy. Cartoon-like illustrations might not seem like the perfect addition to a book about women’s rights, equality and fighting for them, but they are the perfect ones for this book.
