See what had happened was I woke up with a migraine. A real doozy of a skull-splitter. And there I was, in bed with medicines and comfort objects and drawn curtains and agony. Days like this I can’t watch tv, can’t do much of anything besides lie still and quiet and wait for sleep or sweet release of death. I open my kindle, throw it in to dark mode, bump up the text size until the words aren’t blurry and hope to find a story easy enough to follow when my brain is overwhelmed with pain but also entertaining enough to distract from aforementioned agony. And that’s why I finally dove into this ABSOLUTE DELIGHT of a book.
I am a sucker for a good adventure romcom, especially with a dash of fantasy. Here we have Cin(namon), a spice farmer going about her business, until she gets wasted at the town celebration and, well, saves a demon. It’s right in the title. Fallon quickly enlists her to join him in the quest to defeat the sorceress keeping his kind down, they adventure, they make friends, they fall in love, they battle evil, they live happily ever after. Adventure romcom stuff!
What sets this take apart is the fantastic humor. I don’t always love a very casual, conversational narrator. For some reason I find it harder to lose myself in the story. But once I got the hang of the tone, I was completely hooked. The banter was top notch. I laughed, out loud, more than once.
This book was exactly what I needed to get me through a tough day. I appreciate Kimberly Lemming’s ability to create a cozy, sexy fantasy world that I can’t wait to revisit.
