I feel similar about the Goddess Girls Graphic Novel series as I did to PAWS recently. There was nothing new to it and it is flat. However, the interesting part (or at least a fact about the graphic novels) is that the Goddess Girls graphic novels are based on the actual novels of several years ago. At least this makes me wonder how updated they are or are they “old school” mentality? Regardless of their connection to the novels, this book at least can be picked up as book two in a series, and not have read book one. It would help, but not 100% needed.
Goddess Girls Graphic V02 Persephone the Phony Graphic Novel is a funny(ish) story about all the gods and goddesses as kids. Except for Zeus and Demeter. Okay, while Athena and Persephone are technically “kids of gods,” Hades was not. And there are gray areas with Ares and a couple others. But at least this time is not as creepy to have your father, Zeus, having a child with his sister Demeter (wait they did, but it’s not mentioned). Okay at least this time Hades is not the uncle of Persephone, just an older “man” (fourteen to her twelve).
The story is about Persephone learning that she does not always have to “go along to get along” and she can be true to herself. She can just stand up to her mom and say, Mom, I am not a kid anymore so stop being a chariot mom. And she can say, Aphrodite, you might be cool and everything, but no I don’t want to go shopping. And, yes Hades, I would like to be your friend even if you live in the underworld. And the actual story follows how that is hard, but worth it, the end.
Joan Holub, Suzanne Williams, and David Campiti, along with Glass House Graphics created this series (the two is only because Persephone had a cute outfit).
