When I have had a rough few days, and I need to read but thoughts are not sticking, I find that younger/middle reader graphic novels are perfect. I get a fun story, but I do not have to get serious. And with The Do-Over V01 we get a cute story about friends, family, and confidence that has a nice message, but is not “too deep.”
Adults might have to suspend belief a tad when it comes to this graphic novel by Rodrigo Vargas. After all, how many adults do you know go to a middle-schooler to get their hair styled? Because while yes, there are normal cuts, the one hairdo that stands out is the style that is literally a stalk of corn exploding out of the head. Not to mention, I don’t think they have a license to run a business. But overall, it is a fun take on a well-known theme.
We follow three friends, each one with their own unique personality and style. We have the bubbly, somewhat pushy (but with a big heart) artist; the businesswoman/scientist; and the new friend who has two ears for listening, own big heart for understanding and empathy, not to mention has the snacks. Of course, friends are always there for you, but when the three start clashing, can they make their new hair salon business work, as well as their friendship? Intermixed with Spanish, the story unfolds in a quick manner, but is not rushed.
Coni Yovaniniz created glossy images that are simple, but not in a negative manner. You focus on the story; the art is there for (like a good friend) support. They make our characters happy, cartoonlike images that are found, even points are round. It is a cozy, safe story with equally safe and cozy illustrations.
